Sugai Ken’s brilliant debut album on Lullabies For Insomniac is without doubt amongst our favourite albums from 2016 and we are really happy to have him as our second guest for our podcast series.
« Mix » would be a rather untrue way of calling Sugai Ken’s contribution to our podcast series and it seems that “sonic Collage” would be more appropriate for he doesn’t make songs meet but rather composes an abstract landscape using extracts from TV shows, soundtracks as well as his own sounds as raw materials, fiddling with them to extract their sonic essence…
This 47:52 long musical piece gives you the opportunity to witness another side of Japanese music. Far from Hosono-produced Pop songs and catchy boogie tunes from Tokyo, Sugai Ken’s utterly contemporary sound seems to find its roots in his country’s history of avant-garde musical scenes as well as in Musique Concrète.
We are very well aware that this is not an easy piece to listen, but trust us, a full listening of Sugai Ken’s work will prove rewarding!
