When I work on a mix, I often take cues from films. Most of the time, they influence me in a subtle, almost subconscious way. This time though, it would be extremely hard to hide the influence Alan Parker’s Angel Heart had over the mix. I’ve been obsessed with this film since I saw it this winter. It’s a true heretic piece of Hollywood history, a highly imperfect film whose shape reflects its moral contradictions – and Hollywood rarely let this kind of monsters it sometimes creates run free. Angel Heart is portraying moral decay while being itself extremely decadent as a film. That’s fascinating enough to inspire me a 1 hour long mix
For the second hour, I asked Antoine Fontaine, aka NTN, to contribute to the show many months ago. As the deadline I gave him was getting closer, he had no choice but to record a mix on his laptop in a comfortable flat in one of the most expensive parts of London where he somehow landed. I have no idea how he ended up there, all I know is that, deprived of his turntables, he cunningly used layers of sounds, intertwining GRM sound productions with post-punk, dub and psyche rock. And that’s exactly the kind of psychedelic energy I was hoping to get from a NTN mix 🙂 Don’t forget to check his own imprint, Few Crackles !
